What to check before you buy a paint sprayer
- Flow rate (GPM). Gallons per minute sets how fast you can work and which tip sizes the sprayer can support. More GPM means bigger tips, longer hose runs or a second gun.
- Maximum tip size. Match it to your material. Stains and lacquers use small orifices (around .011–.013). Most latex wall paint uses .015–.019. Elastomerics and block filler need .021 and larger. See our spray tip size guide.
- Pressure (PSI). Higher pressure atomizes thicker coatings. Light-duty units like the ControlMax 1900 Pro run up to 1600 PSI, while contractor models reach 3000–3600 PSI.
- Frame style. Skid and stand units are light to carry. Low Rider and High Rider carts roll easily and hold more hose.
- Power source. Choose electric for interiors and sites with power, and gas where there is no outlet or you need maximum output.
